ಪಂಚಪಂಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ

ತತಸ್ತಾನ್ ಅಕುಲಾನ್ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಾಸ್ತ್ರಮೋಹಿತಾನ್ |
ವಸಿಷ್ಠಶ್ಚೋದಯಾಮಾಸ ಕಾಮಧುಕ್ ಸೃಜ ಯೋಗತಃ ||

ಸ|| ತತಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಮೋಹಿತಾನ್ ಅಕುಲಾನ್ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ "ಕಾಮಧುಕ್ ಸೃಜ ಯೋಗತಃ" ಇತಿ ಚೋದಯಾಮಾಸ ||

Seeing those confused and stunned by the astras of Viswamitra , Vasishta implored " Oh Kamadenu produce capable ones".

ತಸ್ಯಾ ಹೂಂಭಾರವಾಜ್ಜಾತಾಃ ಕಾಂಭೋಜಾ ರವಿಸನ್ನಿಭಾಃ |
ಊಧಸಸ್ತ್ವಥ ಸಂಜಾತಾಃ ಪಪ್ಲವಾಃ ಶಸ್ತ್ರ ಪಾಣಯಃ ||
ಯೋನಿದೇಶಾಚ್ಚ ಯವನಾ ಶಕೃದ್ದೇಶಾತ್ ಶಕಸ್ತಥಾ |
ರೋಮಕೂಪೇಷು ಚ ಮ್ಲೇಚ್ಚಾ ಹಾರೀತಾಸ್ಸಕಿರಾತಕಾಃ ||

ಸ|| ತಸ್ಯ ಹೂಂಭಾರಾವಾತ್ ಜಾತಾಃ ರವಿಸನ್ನಿಭಾಃ ಕಾಂಭೋಜಾಃ | ಊಧಸಸ್ತ್ವಥ ಶಸ್ತ್ರ ಪಾಣಯಃ ಪಪ್ಲವಾಃ ಸಂಜಾತಾಃ ||ಯವನಾ ಯೋನಿದೇಶಾತ್ ಚ | ತಥೈವ ಶಕಃ ಶಕೃದೇಶಾತ್ | ಮ್ಲೇಚ್ಚಾ ಹರೀತ ಕಿರಾತಕಾಃ ರೋಮಕೂಪೇಷು ( ಸಂಜಾತಾಃ) ||

Then from the"humkara" came out Kambhojas with the brilliance of Sun, from her udder came Paplavas carrying arms. Yavanas came out of her vagina , Sakas came out of her rectum, Mlecchas, Haritas and Kiratas came out of the pores of her skin.

ತೈ ಸ್ತೈಃ ನಿಷೂದಿತಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸ್ಯ ತತ್ ಕ್ಷಣಾತ್ |
ಸಪದಾತಿಗಜಂ ಸಾಶ್ವಂ ಸ ರಥಂ ರಘುನಂದನ ||

ಸ್ಸ||ಹೇ ರಘುನಂದನ ! ತೈಃ ಸ್ತೈಃ ತತ್ ಕ್ಷಣಾತ್ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಂ ಸಪದಾತಿಗಜಂ ಸಾಶ್ವಂ , ಸ ರಥಂ ನಿಷೂದಿತಂ ||

Oh Raghunandana ! They instantly demolished Viswamitra's foot soldiers, elephants, horses and the chariots.

ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ನಿಷೂದಿತಂ ಸೈನ್ಯಂ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ |
ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸುತಾನಾಂ ಚ ಶತಂ ನಾನಾವಿಧಾಯುಧಮ್|
ಅಭ್ಯಧಾವತ್ ಸುಸಂಕ್ರುದ್ಧಂ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ಜಪತಾಂ ವರಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ನಿಷೂದಿತಂ ಸೈನ್ಯಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸುಸಂಕೃದ್ಧಂ ಶತಂ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸುತಾನಾಂ ನಾನಾವಿಧಾಯುಥಮ್ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ಜಪತಾಂ ವರಂ ಅಭ್ಯಧಾವತ್ ||

Seeing all the forces destroyed by the venerable Vasishta, the hundred sons of Viswamitra with variety of arms angrily rushed towards the venerable sage Vasishta.

ಹೂಂಕಾರೇಣ ತಾನ್ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ದದಾಹ ಭಗವಾನ್ ಋಷಿಃ |
ತೇ ಸಾಶ್ವರಥಪಾದಾತಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ |
ಭಸ್ಮೀಕೃತಾ ಮುಹೂರ್ತೇನ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸುತಾಸ್ತದಾ ||

ಸ|| ಭಗವಾನ್ ಋಷಿಃ ಹುಂಕಾರೇಣ ತಾನ್ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ದದಾಹ | ತದಾ ತೇ ವಿಶ್ವಮಿತ್ರಸುತಾ ಸ ಅಶ್ವ ರಥ ಪಾದಾತಾ ಮುಹೂರ್ತೇನ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಭಸ್ಮೀಕೃತಾ ||

Venerable sage destroyed them with his "humkara". The sons of Viswamitra along with horses chariots and foot soldiers got decimated in a moment by sage Vasishta.

ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ವಿನಾಶಿತಾನ್ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಬಲಂ ಚ ಸುಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ |
ಸವ್ರೀಡಶ್ಚಿಂತಯಾವಿಷ್ಟೋ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೋ ಅಭವತ್ ತದಾ ||
ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ ನಿರ್ವೇಗೋ ಭಗ್ನ ದಂಷ್ಟ್ರ ಇವೋರಗಃ |
ಉಪರಕ್ತ ಇವಾದಿತ್ಯಃ ಸದ್ಯೋ ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಭತಾಂ ಗತಃ ||
ಹತಪುತ್ರ ಬಲೋ ದೀನೋ ಲೂನಪಕ್ಷ ಇವ ದ್ವಿಜಃ|
ಹತದರ್ಪೋ ಹತೋತ್ಸಾಹೋ ನಿರ್ವೇದಂ ಸಮುಪದ್ಯತ ||

ಸ|| ವಿನಾಶಿತಾನ್ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಬಲಂ ಚ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತದಾ ಸು ಮಹಾಯಶಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಃ ಸ ವ್ರೀಡಃ ಚಿಂತಯಾವಿಷ್ಠೋ ಅಭವತ್ | ಸಃ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ ನಿರ್ವೇಗೋ (ಅಭವತ್) | ಭಗ್ನ ದಂಷ್ಟ್ರ ಉರಗಃ ಇವ ( ಅಭವತ್) | ಉಪರಕ್ತ ಆದಿತ್ಯಃ ಇವ ನಿಷ್ಪ್ತಭತಾಂ ಗತಃ ಸದ್ಯ (ಇವ) ಅಭವತ್ | ಹತಪುತ್ರ ಬಲಃ ಲೂನಪಕ್ಷ ಇವ ದೀನಃ | ಹತ ದರ್ಪಃ| ಹತ ಉತ್ಸಾಹಃ| ನಿರ್ವೇದಂ ಸಮುಪದ್ಯತ||

Seeing his forces and sons destroyed, famed Viswamitra felt ashamed and sad. He was like a ocean with spent fury, like a snake with its venomos teeth removed. He was like the pale and dull Sun under eclipse. With both forces and sons killed he was like a bird with clipped wings. With ego destroyed, the spirits subdued he was overcome by extreme pity.

ಸ ಪುತ್ರಮೇಕಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ ಪಾಲಯೇತಿ ನಿಯುಜ್ಯ ಚ |
ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ಕ್ಷತ್ರ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ವನಮೇವಾನ್ವಪದ್ಯತ ||
ಸ ಗತ್ವಾ ಹಿಮತ್ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವಂ ಕಿನ್ನರೋರಗಸೇವಿತಮ್ |
ಮಹಾದೇವ ಪ್ರಸಾದಾರ್ಥಂ ತಪಸ್ತೇಪೇ ಮಹತಪಾಃ ||

ಸ|| ಸಃ ಏಕಂ ಪುತ್ರಂ ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ಕ್ಷತ್ರ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ ಪಾಲಯೇತಿ ನಿಯುಜ್ಯ ವನಮೇವ ಅನ್ವಪದ್ಯತ್ |ಸಃ ಕಿನ್ನರೋರುಗ ಸೇವಿತಂ ಹಿಮವತ್ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಮಹದೇವ ಪ್ರಸಾದಾರ್ಥಂ ತಪಃ ತೇಪೇ ||

He made one of his sons rule over the kingdom as is expected of a Kshatriya and then went forests. He went to that part of Himalayas inhabited by Kinnaras and Nagas and prayed for the favor of Mahadeva.

ಕೇನಚಿತ್ವಥ ಕಾಲೇನ ದೇವೇಶೋ ವೃಷಭಧ್ವಜಃ |
ದರ್ಶಯಾಮಾಸ ವರದೋ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಂ ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್||
ಕಿಮರ್ಥಂ ತಪ್ಯಸೇ ರಾಜನ್ ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಯತ್ ತೇ ವಿವಕ್ಷಿತಮ್|
ವರದೋSಸ್ಮಿ ವರೋ ಯಸ್ತೇ ಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿತಸ್ಸೋS ಭಿದೀಯತಾಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಅಥ ಕೇನಚಿತ್ ಕಾಲೇನ ವರದಃ ವೃಷಭಧ್ವಜಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಂ ಮಹಾಬಲಂ ದರ್ಶಯಾಮಾಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಜನ್ ! ವರದೋ ಅಸ್ಮಿ | ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಕಿಮರ್ಥಮ್ ತಪ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ ! ಯಃ ಸಃ ಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿತಃ ಸ ಅಭಿದೀಯತಾಂ |ತೇ ಯಃ ವರಃ |

After some time Mahadeva who is also called Varada with a bull on his pennant appeared. He said " O Rajan ! I am pleased. Tell me why are you doing the penance. Tell me what you want. I will give what you want."

ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ದೇವೇನ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೋ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ |
ಪ್ರಣಿಪತ್ಯ ಮಹಾದೇವಂ ಇದಂ ವಚನ ಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||
ಯದಿ ತುಷ್ಟೋ ಮಹಾದೇವ ಧನುರ್ವೇದೋ ಮಮಾನಘ |
ಸಾಂಗೋಪಾಂಗೋಪನಿಷದಃ ಸ ರಹಸ್ಯಃ ಪ್ರದೀಯತಾಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ದೇವೇನ ಏವಂ ಉಕ್ತಸ್ತು ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಃ ಮಹಾದೇವಂ ಪ್ರಣಿಪತ್ಯ ಇದಂ ವಚನಮ್ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||ಹೇ ಮಹದೇವ ಸಾಂಗೋಪಾಂಗೋ ಧನುರ್ವೇದಃ ಸ ರಹಸ್ಯಃ ಉಪನಿಷದಃ ಹೇ ಅನಘ ಮಮ ಪ್ರದೀಯತಾಂ |

Having been told thus by Mahadeva, he paid obeisance to him and spoke as follows."Oh Mahadeva if you are pleased ! please grant me the Dhanurveda in full as well as the secrets of Upanishads"

ಯಾನಿ ದೇವೇಷು ಚಾಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ದಾನವೇಷು ಮಹರ್ಷಿಷು |
ಗಂಧರ್ವ ಯಕ್ಷ ರಕ್ಷಸ್ಸು ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಂತು ಮಮಾನsಘ||
ತವಪ್ರಸಾದಾದ್ಭವತು ದೇವದೇವ ಮಮೇಪ್ಸಿತಮ್|
ಏವಮಸ್ತ್ವಿತಿ ದೇವೇಶೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಗತಸ್ತದಾ||

ಸ|| ದೇವೇಷು ದಾನವೇಷು ಮಹರ್ಷಿಸು ಗಂಧರ್ವ ಯಾನಿ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಾನಿ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಂತು ಹೇ ಅನಘ ಮಮ ( ಪ್ರದೀಯತಾಮ್ )||ಹೇ ದೇವ ದೇವ ತವ ಪ್ರಸಾದಾತ್ ಮಮೇಪ್ಸಿತಂ ಭವತು . ತದಾ ಏವಂ ಅಸ್ತು ಇತಿ ದೇವೇಶೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಗತಃ ||

" Oh Great one ! All the powerful weapons of Devas, Danavas , Maharshis,and Gandharvas be provided to me. Oh Gods of Gods with this all my wishes will be fulfilled". Then Mahadeva said " It will be so" and went away.

ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯಚಾಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೋ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ|
ದರ್ಪೇಣ ಮಹತಾ ಯುಕ್ತೋ ದರ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣೋ ಅಭವತ್ ತದಾ||
ವಿವರ್ಧಮಾಣೋ ವೀರ್ಯೇಣ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ ಪರ್ವಣಿ |
ಹತಮೇವ ತದಾ ಮೇನೇ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ಋಷಿಸತ್ತಮಮ್||

ಸ|| ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಃ ದರ್ಪೇಣ ಮಹತಾ ಯುಕ್ತೋ ( ತತ್) ಅಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ತದಾ ದರ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣಂ ಅಭವತ್ ||ವಿವರ್ಥಮಾಣೋ ವೀರ್ಯೇಣ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ ಪರ್ವಣಿ ತದಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ಋಷಿಸತ್ತಮಂ ಹತಮೇವ (ಇತಿ) ಮೇನೇ ||

The mighty and strong King who is always proud became even more full of arrogance having obtained all astras. Then like the ocean in full tide with his increased prowess he thought that the venerable sage Vasishta as good as dead.

ತತೋ ಗತ್ವಾ ಆಶ್ರಮಪದಂ ಮುಮೋಚಾಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ|
ಯೈಸ್ತತ್ ತಪೋವನಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ನಿರ್ದಗ್ಧಂ ಚಾಸ್ತ್ರ ತೇಜಸಾ ||
ಉದೀರ್ಯಮಾಣಮಸ್ತ್ರಂ ತತ್ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ|
ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ವಿಪ್ರದ್ರುತಾಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಮುನಯ ಶ್ಶತಶೋದಿಶಃ ||
ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ ಚ ಯೇ ಶಿಷ್ಯಾಃ ತಥೈವ ಮೃಗ ಪಕ್ಷಿಣಃ|
ವಿದ್ರವಂತೀ ಭಯಾದ್ಭೀತಾ ನಾನಾದಿಗ್ಭ್ಯಃ ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ ||

ಸ|| ತತಃ ಸ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ ಆಶ್ರಮಪದಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಅಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ಮುಮೋಚ | ತತ್ ಅಸ್ತ್ರ ತೇಜಸಾ ಯೈಃ ತತ್ ತಪೋವನಮ್ ಸರ್ವಂ ನಿರ್ದಗ್ದಂ |ತತ್ ಧೀಮತಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಉದೀರ್ಯಮಾನಂ ಅಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸರ್ವೇ ವಿಪ್ರದ್ರುತಾ ಶತಶೋದಿಶಃ |ವಶಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ ಶಿಷ್ಯಾಃ ತಥೈವ ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ ಮೃಗ ಪಕ್ಷಿಣಃ ಭಯಾದ್ಭೀತಾ ನಾನಾದಿಗ್ಭ್ಯಃ ವಿದ್ರವನ್ತೀ ||

Then the king went to that hermitage and released all his weapons. The fire of the fierce weapons burnt that hermitage . Seeing those fierce weapons of Viswamitra creating a havoc hundreds of hermits ran in all directions. The disciples of Vasishta as well as the thousands of scared birds and animals of the hermitage moved in all directions.

ವಸೀಷ್ಠಾಶ್ರಮಪದಂ ಶೂನ್ಯಮಾಸೀನ್ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ |
ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಿವ ನಿಶ್ಶಬ್ದಂ ಆಶೀದಿರಿಣ ಸನ್ನಿಭಮ್||

ಸ|| ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಾಶ್ರಮಪದಂ ಶೂನ್ಯಂ ಆಸೀತ್. ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಿವ ಅಶೀದಿರಿಣ ಸನ್ನಿಭಂ ನಿಶ್ಶಬ್ದಂ ಆಸೀತ್||

The hermitage of venerable Vasishta became empty and bore the silence of a cremation ground for a moment.

ವದತೋ ವೈ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ ಮಾಭೈರಿತಿ ಮುಹುರ್ಮುಹುಃ|
ನಾಶಯಾಮ್ಯದ್ಯ ಗಾಧೇಯಂ ನೀಹಾರಮಿವ ಭಾಸ್ಕರಃ ||

ಸ|| ಮಾಭೈರಿತಿ ಮುಹುರ್ಮುಹುಃ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ ವದತೋ ಅದ್ಯ ಗಾಧೇಯಂ ಭಾಸ್ಕರಃ ನೀವಾರಮಿವ ಅದ್ಯ ನಾಶಯಾಮಿ ||

Saying " donot be afraid " " donot be afraid" venerable Vasishta spoke as follows."This day I will destroy the son of Gadhi like the sun destoys the fog!

ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೋ ಜಪತಾಮ್ ವರಃ |
ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಂ ತದಾ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಸರೋಷಂ ಇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||
ಆಶ್ರಮಂ ಚಿರ ಸಂವೃದ್ಧಂ ಯದ್ವಿನಾಶಿತವಾನಪಿ |
ದುರಾಚಾರೋsಸಿ ತನ್ಮೂಢ ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ತ್ವಂ ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ ||

ಸ|| ಏವಂ ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಜಪತಾಮ್ ವರಃ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ ತದಾ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಂ ಸರೋಷಂ ಇದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ |ಚಿರ ಸಂವೃದ್ಧಂ ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ ಯದ್ವಿನಾಸಿತವಾನಪಿ ದುರಾಚಾರೋಸಿ ! ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ತನ್ ಮೂಢ ತ್ವಂ ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ ||

Having said this that repository of penence Vasishta spoke with anger to Viswamitra. "O Fool ! destroying this hermitage which was nurtured over a long time you have committed a crime. So foolish one you will no longer be there !"

ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಪರಮಕೃದ್ಧೋ ದಂಡಮುದ್ಯಮ್ಯ ಸತ್ವರಃ |
ವಿಧೂಮಮಿವ ಕಾಲಾಗ್ನಿಂ ಯಮದಂಡ ಮಿವಾಪರಮ್||

ಸ|| ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಪರಮಕೃದ್ಧಃ ವಿಧೂಮಂ ಕಾಲಾಗ್ನೀಂ ಇವ ಅಪರಂ ಯಮದಂಡ ಮಿವ ದಂಡಂ ಸತ್ವರಃ ಉದ್ಯಮ್ಯ ||

Having said this he was like the fire of time without smoke. Then he took his staff which was like the staff of Yama.

|| इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये बालकांडे पंचपंचाशस्सर्गः ||

|| Thus ends the fifty fifth Sarga of Balakanda in Valmiki Ramayana ||
